I was really excited when I heard about the D-Link SecureSpot back at CES in January. I hate having to use precious resources like CPU cycles, RAM and drive space for all of the security that today’s Internet requires, so a hardware box that sits between my router and outside world sounded just great. Unfortunately, when I inquired about availability back then, D-Link gave me the "availability to be determined" speech. Looks like TBD = now.
The DSD-150 hardware protects your home network and includes the following features for up to 4 computers:
- Parental controls
- Pop-up blocker
- Virus protection
- Spam blocker
- Spyware and Identity protection
- Firewall
- Network reporting
You can purchase the device now directly through D-Link’s site at a cost of $99.95 although you may find it for less at other retailers. Personally, it’s a little "too little, too late" for me and the DSD-150 as I find Windows Live OneCare working well for me. Although it only protects three of my computers, the initial cost is approximately half and I’ve read that uses the least amount of system resources when compared to the other software packages on the market.
