BBC Restructuring: Highfield’s Spending Power Soars

With this big restructuring at BBC, the till-now-head of new media Ashley Highfield is now heading the new Future Media & Technology division. That will see his budget soar from 250 million GBP to almost 400 million GBP with the task of speeding up the digitizing of 1.4 million-plus hours of TV and audio content.
Overall, his new media division has grown from 650 people to as many as 1,500…he will assume “end-to-end” control of the 450-strong information and archives division – including its 30 million GBP annual budget.
He said there would be no job losses because each of the divisions and staff now under his control have already been through a “value for money” review. However, he said there may be a streamlining of technology.
