That was the advertiser M&A we mentioned this weekend: Mobile content applications firm Motricity has bought Los Angeles-based GoldPocket Wireless, financial details were not disclosed. GoldPocket Wireless is a developer of mobile content and marketing solutions using such as text messaging and interactive contests linked to TV programming. It has been involved with mobile campaigns for TV shows such as The Apprentice, Rock the Vote and CSI New York. Clients include NBC, CNN, CBS, BET and Bravo.
Motricity said it the acquisition was part of the company’s focus on the off-deck market. Motricity HQs will remain in Durham, North Carolina. Motricity will continue to grow the GoldPocket Wireless offices in LA.
Interesting back story: GoldPocket Wireless was founded in 2000 as Moeo and touted itself as one of the first mobile marketing companies. It was acquired by GoldPocket Interactive, the iTV applications firm, in August of 2002. The Goldpocket, the parent, was bought out last year by Norwegian TV technology company Tandberg Television, for $78.5 million mixture of shares and cash. As a result, Tandberg had a 49% stake in GoldPocket Wireless. This is Tandberg’s exit.
Also, Tandberg’s a public company on the Norwegian exchange…so if anyone knows Norwegian, and knows how to read the public company filings there, the sale price for their share will probably be disclosed…easy to extrapolate the total sale price.
