Cellfire has secured $10 million in a second round of funding round led by Menlo Ventures. Cellfire has a mobile coupon service, and did a limited California-only launch in December last year and a full launch in the US last month. “This latest round of funding will enable Cellfire to accelerate sales and marketing efforts, including product enhancement, expansion in business development and partnership activities.” Storm Ventures led the first round, which also had Menlo as an investor.
This story, “Coupon via text message cuts out the paper trail” gives a good overview of the U.S. market. Brent Dusing, CEO of Cellfire, said his company specifically wanted to avoid text messages because consumers could see it as a form of spam. Cellfire’s system requires consumers to download software to their phones. The company then transmits coupon offers to the phone, where consumers can choose what they want. So far, Cellfire has signed up eight advertisers, including Hollywood Video and TGI Friday’s, who pay for the service.
