There has been some speculation on other industry blogs about how Korean handset player VK Mobile‘s bankruptcy would affect SKT-Earthlink JV MVNO Helio, since one of the two handsets in its current offering is a VK-manufactured Kickflip.
I asked the company PR about this, and this is what they said: “Unlike other MVNOs that sell off-the-shelf devices, Helio was directly involved in designing and developing the Kickflip, and as a result, we are fully capable of supporting the device with our internal resources throughout its lifecycle, independent of the particular manufacturing line that produced it. Our members will continue to receive the unusually good mobile service they are coming to expect from Helio.”
Does this mean we’ll see different handsets from other Korean manufacturers coming into the Helio lineup?
“We have and will continue to work with multiple manufacturers to create unique and exclusive mobile devices. We have not announced details about specific manufacturers, but we are working with the best in the industry and people won’t be disappointed.”
