Taipei has announced plans to launch a city-wide mobile wi-fi service…”Ten companies are pushing a “Taipei Easy Call” initiative which involves mobiles which can switch between calls using wi-fi and the phone network.”
This would provide a cheaper alternative to phone calls, which may get people paying to use the network. NYTimes had an article (now behind the sub wall) pointing out that the wi-fi network had an abysmal 40,000 customers paying $12.50 to use the servic, mostly because there are so many free wi-fi hotspots. However, the network is pretty good according to JiWire, and a unified wi-fi system would be necessary for a mobile phone service, rather than for laptops which are better described as nomadic.
