NYT has a good profile of TMZ.com, the celebrity news and gossip site which is backed by AOL…as the story says, a lot of its popularity is based on the video clips it uploads.
As NYT puts it: “In an age in which the public may have to wait an entire news cycle before it can see who swanned down the latest red carpet, TMZ’s offer of celebrity video that is sometimes only hours old — whether the subjects are driving into parked cars, spouting off drunk or simply walking out of a club — has proved both novel and noteworthy in the trenches of celebrity journalism.”
