Yahoo And 3 In Global Web Deal

Hutchison’s 3 has signed on Yahoo to provide web services to its operators around the globe, starting with 3UK. From the press release: “Under the terms of the agreement, the two companies will work together to offer key Internet services such as Yahoo! Search, Yahoo! Mobile Web, Yahoo! Messenger, Yahoo! Mail, and Yahoo! Go for Mobile on 3’s networks around the world. The companies also plan to make additional Yahoo! services available to 3 subscribers in the future.” The services could vary by country.
This will give 3 users access to the web (from last September it was allowing access to sites it had vetted, and before that it was a walled garden), using “Yahoo!’s expertise in transcoding online content for mobile devices”. There’ll also be access to Yahoo services such as Yahoo photos (with some integration going on, I hope).
iTWire notes that there is already a local deal between 3 Australia and Yahoo!7, and has “already launched Yahoo! Messenger on 3 with good customer uptake and earlier this year partnered to deliver mobile video content from the Torino 2006 Winter Olympics to 3 customers.”
From some of the writing around the web it sounds like Yahoo will offer both specialized services (such as it’s own stock quote service) along with the ability to search the wider web.
