The W3C has released its Mobile Web Best Practices 1.0 document. Pay attention — you’ll need to conform to these should you wish to get a .mobi domain. However, the guidelines are aimed at web pages in general rather than ones specifically created for mobile users: “The majority of Web sites out there do not work well on cell phones,” said Daniel Applequist, a Vodafone executive who chaired the group that worked on the guidelines, adding that if more Web sites were less awkward to navigate on cell phones, they could attract more users.”
The guidelines also tend to encourage better design overall (at least from my point of view) with recommendations against big graphics, pop-ups and frames. Applequist also pointed out that cookies don’t work on mobile phones, so developers need to find an alternative.
In addition to the guidelines the group has released a guidelines checker and a wiki.
