ThinkPad X60 TabletPC due end of year

A comment left on jkOnTheRun points to a web page on the Wake Forest University faculty web site that indicates the next version of the ThinkPad Tablet PC, the X60, will be out late in 2006.

Faculty members who choose the X60 Tablet PC will continue to use their current ThinkPad throughout the fall and exchange it for the Tablet in January, 2007. The new model Tablet will not be released by Lenovo until late 2006. We are choosing to wait for the newer model because the performance of the current model Tablet PC is not comparable to that of the T60. The new model will provide upgraded features that will better suit your needs.

This refreshed ThinkPad is rumored to be a Core Duo model, similar to the very popular X41t. Apparently existing ThinkPad customers like the University have been given this information by Lenovo.

Why does Wake Forest like the X60?

The Committee on Information Technology has approved a Tablet PC option in addition to the standard notebook computer for faculty members who are scheduled to exchange this summer. The standard ThinkPad for faculty will be the Lenovo T60 – a high performance computer with Intel’s new Core Duo chip. This ThinkPad compares in size to previous R models, but is a little bit lighter and a lot more powerful. The other option is for a small, very lightweight (2.9 lbs) Tablet PC, the Lenovo X60. This option combines portability with innovative features that allow the ThinkPad to be converted into a pen-enabled writing tablet.
