Taking on from my post on Indian portals and Alexa ranking, Sanjay of Moneycontrol.com has left a comment. He says Moneycontrol.com (a finance portal from the TV18 group) is bigger than WSJ.com and MSN.co.in in page views and it also matches them in Alexa ranking. Look at the graph here for a comparison.
I think the reason for Moneycontrol’s success (Alexa ranking: 905) is that it has managed to become the primary portal for information on Indian stocks. It also has very robust message boards. Although I am not a fan of their design and navigation, the site seems to attract all the traffic looking for business news.
Who is the loser in the business news space? Economictimes.com hasn’t been able to generate interest as an independent domain, it ranks way below on Alexa – at 405,030. The ET site is actually a sub-domain of parent site Indiatimes (economictimes.indiatimes.com), attracting only 10 per cent of the traffic. ET website definitely needs an overhaul, and I hope the new team looks into it.
Let’s look at the Alexa ranking of Indian business news websites. A surprising winner is The Financial Express. The print edition is a distant fourth in the circulation sweepstakes, but it has a robust website.
Moneycontrol.com – 905
Financial Express – 16,749
Business Standard – 17,200
Myiris – 22,608
The Hindu Business Line – 31,359
The Economic Times – 405,030
