NAA Mid Year: Web Will Be Key Revenue Driver

The contribution from online advertising is still fairly small for most newspaper chains — an industry average of about 5 percent — but publishers speaking at the NAA Mid-Year Media Review said that is changing.
— Tribune Co. projects online revenue of $222 million — 6 percent — this year but estimates online operations could provide 12-15 percent of publishing revenues by 2010. Tribune’s strategy — under fire by some members of its board — relies on more investment and more revenue from internet operations.
— Belo Corp. is trying to capitalize further on its 57-percent online ad increase in 1Q06.
— Dow Jones is working toward decreasing its print contribution, alrady at 70 percent, to less than 50 percent.
— Media General expects online revenue of $30 million this year and $50 million in 2008.
