Len Apcar, editor in chief of NYTimes.com for the past four years, moves to Hong Kong as DME-Asia for the International Herald Tribune “with important responsibilities for all of the company’s journalistic interests in Asia.” He succeeds Nick Stout, whose move to Paris to handle the intergration of web and print operations was announced previously.
Among the aspects empasized in the internal announcement: the appointment gives the NYT a seasoned senior editor at work six hours ahead of Paris and 12 hours ahead of New York, a nod to the 24-hour news cycle. That’s fitting even though I’m not sure how this really fits on the ladder of NYT moves/promotions.etc. Apcar didn’t do it alone but, from this outsider’s perspective, his determination to make NYTimes.com a true 24-hour news site played a major role in creating the site as it is today.
Romenesko has the memo. It starts with “It will not surprise you to hear that Asia is a vital part of our future.” … The IHT has a circulation of 91,000 in Asia.
Update: Via NYTCO corporate comunications, no decision about a replacement. Given the integration of the print and online newsrooms, the real question may be whether the position will continue to exist.
