Electronic Arts Buying Online Multiplayer Game Firm Mythic

Electronic Arts is buying Virginia-based Mythic Entertainment for an undisclosed sum. Mythic, founded in 1995, focuses on developing online multiplayer role-playing games, including “Dark Age of Camelot.”
EA, which didn’t disclose terms of the deal, said it will form an MMOG game-development studio in Fairfax, Va., where Mythic is based, called EA Mythic.
The success of one offering, Vivendi Universal SA’s World of Warcraft, caught much of the industry off guard, and now EA is playing catch up. EA, through an earlier acquisition, operates one of the original MMOGs, Ultima Online, which still has a strong following. But other efforts — like The Sims Online, an Internet version of the popular Sims series of games — met with less success.
