The headline of this article asks whether Asia is the biggest market for mobile TV, but the answer is quite clearly yes — at least in terms of subscriber numbers. It’s got a head start on technology in Korea and Japan, and as the rest of the world catches up so will China and India, so the region will maintain its lead. “Portio Research predicted that the Asia-Pacific region will break the magic 1 billion-subscriber mark in 2006, and double the number to 2 billion mobile phone users by 2011…According to Dave McQueen, principal analyst for handsets at Informa Telecoms & Media, there will be 68.4 million mobile broadcast TV users by 2010 in the Asia-Pacific, or nearly 55 percent of the world’s total.”
There’s an interesting graph showing Europe clocking just over 30 million users by 2010, with North America showing around 15 million.
There’s also a graph by Informa on technology, showing DVB-H way ahead of the pack — although MediaFLO isn’t included.
