US-based broadband telephone company Vonage is looking at setting up shop in India, The Economic Times reports. It’s talking to operators – both in the public and private sector – to start broadband phone service in the country. This is likely to bring in a situation where consumers can make a call to the US and UK at local call rates. The report quotes an unnamed industry source: “Vonage is exploring the possibility of a partnership with an incumbent operator. The company is in conversation with Indian telcos, both in the private and the public sector.” Apparently the company is not looking at setting up an international gateway (so it does not need approval from the government’s Foreign Investment Promotion Board) in India. It’s currently exploring the possibility of a sales tie-up. A senior team from Vonage is expected to visit India next month.
