According to internet statistics provider IPWalk the .mobi sunrise period — for general trademark holders rather than the mobile trademark holders — has been a success, with 5,000 domain names registered during the first two days (it started on June 12). Examples of brands grabbing the names include Virgin, Target, eBay and Ferrari.
“There is a trend among companies to go directly to the consumer,” said Alexa Raad, Dotmobi’s VP of marketing and business development. “They are opening up the gates, reaching consumers more efficiently.
