IDC is predicting that mobile music in the US will generate more than a billion dollars from 50 million users by 2010. A survey by the research company found that 22% of respondents said they would buy at least one over-the-air full-track download within three months of their availability, assuming they had an appropriate handset.
“Eight percent of respondents (ages 25 to 44 – the core demographic of OTA customers, IDC says) indicated they would buy four or more tracks.”
The number of US customers buying mobile full-tracks will be around half that of online music buyers according to IDC…although this doesn’t indicate how much each customer spends. The report said mobile music buyers may outnumber online music buyers by 2010.
IDC reckons $2 is a good price point for mobile downloads, “as long as mobile storefronts are well-designed and offer a wide selection of music, and the music listening experience on the device is comparable to MP3 players”.
