NYTCO: Online Ad Rev Up 26.9 Percent In May; About Up 59 Percent; TimesSelect Update

The New York Times Company’s May numbers are out, showing, overall, its highest revenue growth this year with total ad revenues up 4.4 percent over May 2005. Some details:
— Online advertising revenues across the news media groups rose 26.9 percent with”robust” growth in display and classifieds.
— About.com continues to make the company look smart. Ad revenues were up 59 percent to $5.6 million “principally due to a significant increase in cost-per-click advertising.” Display advertising strength continued.
— New England Media Group continues to struggle; ad revenues dropped 6.9 percent. On the plus side, retail was up.
TimesSelect: Can’t really say on the strength of one month but TimesSelect may be plateauing. The service has 490,000 subscribers, up slightly from the 482,000 subs reported for April. The ratio of print/online subs to online-only continues to be about the same — 63 percent (308,900) to 37 percent (181,300). Actual revenues are difficult to calculate accurately because of various offers, including a half-price academic rate.
