TRAI Proposes Interconnect Charges On SMS, Premium SMS Tariffs Also May Go Up

The Hindu Business Line: Short Messaging Services (or texting) could be expensive in india with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) suggesting to impose interconnect usage charges (IUC) on every SMS sent. In a consultation paper on regulating SMS, the TRAI has also suggested to review the pricing for premium messaging services like the ones used by broadcasters for voting and participating in competitions. Currently, interconnect charges are paid by operators to each other only for voice calls. “TRAI has, however, acknowledged that there is an apprehension that IUC could increase SMS tariffs and has therefore sought opinion of all the stakeholders by June 30.”

Here is the TRAI release (pdf) and the 25-page consultation paper.
