More Than Half Of Online UK World Cup Fans Opt For BBC

Looks like the BBC is dominating online World Cup coverage in the UK, with more than half of users visitiing sports web sites last week opting for the BBC Sport site. The stat comes from Nielsen/NetRatings, which also says the BBC attracted more than four times the traffic of nearest competitor Sky Sports. Probably the prime reason for the difference: the BBC is streaming video of every game it televises. It’s also streaming audio — the same-as-TV liimit means some games can only be heard online, not seen — and is providing highlights.
But watching the games online requires the same TV license that covers on-air viewing, something that hasn’t yet sunk in for everyone. According to the BBC, which is supported by license fees, businesses are being warned not to let staff watch the games online without buying the requisite license or face a fine.
