Reliance Communications Seeks To Provide GSM Service Too

Business Standard: Reliance Communications (RCoVL), the CDMA-based telecom business of the Anil Dirubhai Ambani Enterprises, plans to move into GSM business too. The company has sought permission from the department of telecommunications (DoT) for usage of the 1800 MHz frequency for starting GSM service. Since it’s a unified access licencing regime in India, one doesn’t need a separate licence for providing GSM service. The group’s Reliance Telecom, a separate company and not part of RCoVL, already operates GSM service in the country’s eastern circles like North East, West Bengal and Orissa.
Since the spectrum allocation issue is yet to be resolved by the government, it looks like Reliance is looking at getting additional spectrum by applying for permission for GSM service. Once given the permission, it plans to launch service in Mumbai and Delhi.
