The controversial ad software/adware companies 180solutions and Hotbar have merged into a new business called Zango (which was already a product offering from 180). Bellevue, Wash.-based 180solutions makes software that delivers pop-up ads as people perform Web searches, including its now-namesake Zango Search Assistant. Hotbar, based in NYC, offers toolbars with ad displays for Microsoft’s IE, Outlook and Outlook Express. In exchange for displaying ads, Zango and Hotbar gives access to content such as videos, games and tools.
SeattlePI blog: Terms were not disclosed, though the deal adds about 10 million new active users and nearly doubles Zango’s online ad revenue to $100 million. Zango, which is privately held and backed by Spectrum Equity Investors, will continue to be based in Bellevue with the current management team in place.
