As a sign of the way mobile gaming is going (hopefully) Gameloft’s new 2006 Real Football will allow people to play against other users in the same country as well as other European countries. It’s an i-mode service…
“The cross-country competition will be supported by O2 in the UK and Ireland, with the tournament running for approximately six weeks (ending on the 9th July) to allow football fans plenty of time to get their practice in and take on the best players in Greece, Germany, the Netherlands and Israel to compete for a range of prizes including footballs, football boots, World Cup merchandising goodies and a plasma television.”
There’s other cross-border football games aimed at a FIFA audience…Brazilian developer Meantime Games has announced Penalty Cup, “challenge a friend or let the system randomly choose your opponent. Then both players decide their defensive and offensive strikes and send them to a server, that analyses the entries and sends back the resulting moves to both devices.” There are many countries around the world the opponent could be in, with Meantime releasing the game in Brazil, the US, some European countries, Australia, India and Venezuela. Meantime is also teaming with Goal Mobile, which focuses on football-related applications for wireless devices to deliver football-focused games, wallpapers, videos and other contents to almost 500 million users from 29 countries.
