(reg required) Both the BBC and ITV will put a channel on a new six-month mobile TV trial using DAB technology which launched in London today. “BBC News 24, ITV’s new interactive channel ITV Play, Emap’s music offering Q, Turner’s Cartoon Network, Eurosport and Teachers’ TV will be available on the trial as will all the UK’s digital radio channels, a seven-day programme guide and “red button” interactive services.”
DAB has the benefit of having spectrum available while DVB-H will have to wait until the analogue switch-off, currently set for 2012. It’s also similar to the DMB trials in Korea, for which there are handsets in the market.
Silicon.com: The first, three-month phase will explore the audiovisual side of DMB and DAB-IP, to be followed by a second phase, looking into interactive services, including ‘red button’ functionality and pay-per-view services such as sports or adult programming. BT is planning to launch a DAB-IP service later this year with Virgin Mobile.
