I recently did an interview with Tom Glocer, the CEO of Reuters, about his company’s efforts in embracing open-media and other online efforts.
Glocer has a “seeder of clouds” view of the incumbent big media companies, and this has resonated loudly among the other large media companies and blogs. As a “seeder of clouds”, media companies provide content, and the general public seeds this content into their own creations.
Glocer has also changed Reuters’ online focus, deciding to pull back from open Web syndication and concentrate instead on Reuters.com as its destination brand and Web site. It is still too early in this transformation process to measure its success, but it is clear that the company has also done well by embracing the blogosphere and other kinds of alternative media. For example, Reuters recently funded Global Voices, a new non-profit entity that is focused on bringing under-represented countries into the news mix.
