EU To Propose Flexi Spectrum Licensing; Boon For Cross-Country Content Services

EU is planning a rather ambitious shake-up of spectrum licensing policies, which could see mobile operators, TV groups and broadband providers competing against rivals across countries in Europe for access to prized airwaves.
Viviane Reding, the EU media commissioner, wants to spur a pan-European market through which companies could buy and sell cross-border access, over which these content services could be delivered.
But as FT says, spectrum is usually managed by national authorities, and the suggestion that the resource be “traded” across borders could encounter stiff opposition from member states keen to retain control over their airwaves and lucrative spectrum auctions.
VNUnet: Currently, technology from one region does not always work in another because different parts of the spectrum are used to transmit different services. Any standardization is likely to be greeted with approval by manufacturers, which could produce a single device that works across a number of countries.
