BBC Reaches New Media Exploitation Pact With Pact

In UK, BBC has become the first broadcaster to settle with independent producer trade body Pact over the exploitation of programme rights, including who has rights to new media avenues. The deal gives BBC a seven day primary exploitation “window”, followed by a six month “holdback” period, before the rights owner (the producer) can start flogging the property to all and sundry. Pact wants this to be the template for the deals it strikes with all other UK broadcasters.
The deal also smooths the way for the launch of the BBC iPlayer catch-up service, which will allow viewers to watch programming from the previous seven days.
This deal will increase pressure on other broadcasters – ITV, Channel 4 and Channel Five – who have yet to reach agreement on new media rights.
