@ MEX: More Consumer Research

[by Jemima Kiss] From the the PMN Mobile User Experience conference in London last week:
Researcher Tracy Ross from ESRI at Loughborough University presented insights into user research. It’s a shame there wasn’t time to go into this more because there was nothing we don’t already know in the overview. Insights from following a posse of students round on a night out: they do want to be able to use their phone as a payment system and want to be able to ‘point and pay’. On who plays what types of games, surprise surprise: girls like simple, time-filling games like stacking puzzles and guys tend to be much more competitive – they want to show off their high scores (yawn) on more complex games. Similarly with storing images and text on phones, females keep stuff with an emotional attachment, whereas guys tend to keep images to show off to their mates.
Ross’ wish-list for new services:
– context based and adaptable
– support for variable natural interaction
– seamless mobile integration
– task based not service based
– support social networks
– tap into small motivations
And she also suggested that users want to manipulate images (highbrow stuff like drawing moustaches on their friends’ faces, that kind of thing), be able to both post stuff and then access it on their phone.
