Netflix Tries Different Kind Of Movie Distribution

New Netflix division Red Envelope Entertainment makes its entry into the movie distribution business this summer with IFC Films’ “Sherrybaby.” Netflix has all the rights — theatrical, DVD, download, TV — and will make the movie available from Netflix.com on Nov.7, less than three months after its Aug. 25 theater release. Press release.
Correction: I should not have described this deal as the Netflix entry into film distribution in theaters. This does differ from “The Puffy Chair,” mentioned by the reader whose comment prompted this correction; that is a co-distribution deal with Roadside Attractions that involves sharing marketing costs and profits. Its release to a limited number of theaters began over the weekend. IFC Films will handle the “Sherrybaby” theatrical release for Netflix.
