Monotype Imaging, which develops and licenses fonts, has made a move on the mobile front. The company has signed a deal with Qualcomm to offer its technology as an extension to the BREW client porting kit and software development kit, allowing for scalable fonts which are easier to read. The technology also helps to position and render multilingual text, including complex scripts such as Arabic, Hebrew and Thai.
Monotype has also developed a “suite of scalable fonts for mobile phones” which it hopes to license to handset manufacturers, wireless operators, content providers and publishers to integrate into their products. The fonts have been designed for the small handset screen and are being released as “theme-based designs that allow users to imbue their cell phones with personality traits ranging from ‘exotic’ and ‘friendly’ to ‘athletic’ and ‘powerful’.”
