“The Indian government is targeting 250 million telephone connections in the country by next year, and plans to step up to 500 million connections by 2010, the country’s minister for communications and information technology, Dayanidhi Maran said.”
The plan calls for the expansion of the geographical coverage to 85% of the country by next year, and the allocation later this year of spectrum for 3G services.
Correction: The 500 million figure is for both fixed and mobile phones. There is currently around 150 million phone connection in India, with less than 50 million of them fixed line…and mobile is growing faster.
