The State of India’s Online Classifieds Market

Anurag Gupta has an interesting post on Indian classified business. It has numbers about online jobs classifieds, and industry veterans like Sanjeev Bikhchandani contribute with their views.
Some ballpark numbers according to Anurag:

Jobs / Recruitment
Print : Rs. 100 crore ($22.2 million)
Online: Rs. 200 crore ($44.44)

Total classifieds business
Print: Rs. 500 crore ($111 million)
Online: Rs. 250 crore ($55.5 million)

Advertising revenues
All media: Rs. 12,000 crore ($2.6 billion)
Online: Rs. 400 crore (including online classifieds) ($88.8 million)

Sanjeev Bikhchandani of Naukri has these comments to offer. According to him, the total print job ads market could be Rs 400 crore when one adds display print job ads (The Times of India’s Ascent etc). He agrees with the assumption that total job portal revenue in India for the year (2005-06) would be around Rs. 140 to 150 crore.
However more than 65 per cent of this comes from resume database access (where print publications cannot compete), he says. Online job ads only contribute around Rs 50 crore, while print ads contribute Rs 400 crore. But jobsites are growing at 80% per annum whereas print job ads are growing by 20%. He also adds that the Rs 250 crore online classifieds comes from jobs and matrimonials. Other categories are virtually non existent.
