The lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court by Fox, NBC Universal, Paramount Pictures, CBS and Disney claims that Cablevision would be breaching copyright law if it stores shows remotely. Their contention: Cablevision’s remote DVR actually is a VOD service sans payment to the content providers. Instead of consumers using a device to make a recording for personal use, Cablevision would be copying the programs and redistributing them without permission. The court’s decision and the likely appellate process could have lasting ramifications beyond one cable company.
