New York Times R&D: Business Catalyst, NYC

The New York Times Company is seeking a Business Catalyst within its new Research & Development group.
S/he must be able to quickly grasp the essence of new technologies, and see how these technologies can be transformed into consumer-facing products and services. We are looking for someone who has an innate curiosity and a passion for new ideas; someone who is equally comfortable with business development and with content development.
Responsibilities:
— Develop and cultivate a deep familiarity with all of The New York Times Company’s digital product offerings at all its units; keep abreast of product plans and roadmaps.
— Participate in brainstorming new product opportunities for the company to test.
— Serve as the bridge between the company’s R&D unit and the operating units in order to both identify potential applications for R&D to develop, and to facilitate the transfer and testing of R&D prototypes to the units.
— Monitor the competitive landscape for new innovations and applications that are applicable to the company’s digital product suite.
— Partner with the “Futurist” colleague within R&D to identify early-stage companies who are executing on new trends for potential partnerships and collaboration.
— Work with corporate development to build business cases for applications developed in R&D.
— Assist in technology transfer between the units; help identify, cultivate and communicate best practices within the operating units; develop case studies and centers of excellence for digital publishing practices.
Requirements:
— Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
— Minimum 3 years of experience with new media product development, business development, or both.
— Experience in a startup or entrepreneurial environment is a plus, as is experience in a role that required gathering information, status, perspective and opinions inside as well as outside the organization.
— Strong communication skills; ability to present to senior management and all levels of the company.
— Ability to learn quickly.
— A passionate user of digital media technology.
