Updated below: So says this FT story…so what happened to Murdoch’s plans to buy a search engine? I suppose they couldn’t find a good one left. Also, it is not just about search technology, it is about contextual advertising that comes with it. And, MySpace’s own search sucks. Despite that, it has started registering among search engine rankings, because of its sheer size.
FT says MySpace is in talks with either Google or Microsoft to use their search engine and search advertising…Yahoo is less interested in it, the story says, though I’m not sure why that would be the case.
Bambi speculated on MySpace’s own search engine last month: “You can see how search would generate a lot of revenue for them if they owned those search-results pages each MySpace member lands on.”
Updated: Guardian: This story runs with this, and comes to a conclusion that this “is an obvious, albeit critical, strategic step that ultimately could determine whether it develops a viable business model or becomes another over-hyped dotcom fad.” Overblown conclusion, if you ask me.
