The new MVNO Helio had its official launch party in LA last night, and it presented Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg its new handsets, along with Korean LPGA golfers such as Pearl Siin, in an attempt to generate celebrity word-of-mouth. (Updated: Three more pics form the party are here on Flickr..Jenna Elfman was also there)
Around 200 guests attended the party held at the LA Park Hyatt hotel, this story says, which also says that Cruise is a good friend of Helio CEO Sky Dayton.
The MVNO will soon begin promotional events and service demonstrations (popularized through its partnership with MySpace) while touring LA, NYC, San Francisco, Chicago and Washington, D.C.
Korean partner SK Telecom will specifically target Koreans living in the United States…it will offer 100-minute free calls to Korea, ringback tone and mobile game services until June 30.
P.S.: I am surprised Helio invited Korean press to the event (three Korean media mentions that I saw), and not the U.S. trade press (aka us)…but wait, we would ask the tough questions, right?
