Not that any of this opposition has done anything till now, but they’re trying again: Uk media groups News International (Murdoch-owned), Associated Newspapers and the Telegraph Group have taken the rare step of joining forces to demand that the govt curtail the BBC’s “digital empire-building”.
They have asked the government to ensure that the licence fee does not subsidize BBC’s growth into the digital arena. It asks that the licence fee be kept at or below the rate of inflation to stop the BBC’s digital expansion harming commercial growth.
Associated Newspapers fears that BBC expansion of local services will affect its local newspapers and websites, while News International worries that BBC plans to launch a rival version of its community website, MySpace.com.
Guardian blog: What seems to have aroused their ire is the BBC Creative Future policy, unveiled late April, where the BBC said it would resdesign its website to “exploit” existing technologies such as Flickr, YouTube, Technorati and Wikipedia – in line with its new digital mantra of share, find and play.
