QuiclyBored covered some mobile game panels at E3, “3G and Mobile’s Killer App” and “Improving the Mobile Marketplace”. A good place to get some thought-bites from some of the industries heavy hitters.
There’s not enough promotion of mobile games going on because most mobile games developers don’t have the cash. “President and CEO of Glu, Greg Ballard, pointed out that while Verizon has recently surpassed MacDonald’s in North America for marketing dollars spent (indicating that they have the budget to offer a major push of mobile games if they wanted), mobile gaming accounts on average for about 1/10 of 1% of a carrier’s total revenue.”
The argument then moves onto the mobile storefront on the operators decks, which most people agree is almost worse than useless.
3G offers are better experience for mobile games, but “carriers often demand that developers create games that will function on both 2.5G and 3G networks, forcing them to make games for the lowest common denominator and therefore not taking advantage of the power of 3G handsets”.
There was also a rejection of Robert Nashak’s (Glu) assertion that people don’t want high-end 3G games but casual games. “Lincoln Wallen, CTO of EA Mobile (said): “If you have a game that someone’s playing casually, the game’s failing.”
