A Microsoft exec has denied reports in the book The Xbox 360 Uncloaked that it is planning on releasing a handheld console, claiming that Microsoft aims to “capitalise on the hundreds of millions of handsets that are out there, and give people a chance to connect that with other entertainment experiences”.
Which makes sense — Microsoft doesn’t make PC hardware, it used what was available. It couldn’t do that with game consoles because the manufacturers wouldn’t go for it, so it made its own hardware. Despite the wariness of the mobile phone industry about letting Microsoft in, there’s plenty of scope for the software behemoth to utilise current hardware.
