Barrio Mobile (or more accurately, parent company Cellfish) has apologised for the controversial “La Migra” ringtone, claiming it was satirical rather than rascist. Which should have been obvious — a company targeting the hispanic sector is hardly going to go around insulting that sector. The ringtone was written by Mexican-American comic Paul Saucido who believes that “people of Hispanic background need to maintain a sense of humor about the immigration situation”. GearLog has an interview with Saucido, who puts his position quite well. “I think because of the times, right now people are a little extra sensitive [about immigration issues,]” he said. “I’m sensitive to this issue! But people obviously leave their senses of humor behind when they get so much fever in them. I thought the Migra character was the last character that would get that kind of reaction.” He says companies need a bit of backbone rather than caving into the first advocacy group that comes along, which is true — after all, no matter what you do, someone somewhere is going to get offended.
