This is the first stateside commercial win for the commercial avatar of BitTorrent: Warner Bros. will become the first major studio to distribute its films and TV shows online using BitTorrent. No date yet, but could be this summer. Pricing is also undetermined, although individual TV shows could be $1 and movies will be sold for about the price of buying a DVD, BitTorrent said.
It will be a download service with rental and purchase downloads available the same day as DVD. For DVD burning, the burned copy will only play on the computer used to download the film and not on standard DVD players.
Last month, Warner launched a similar download service in Germany, using BMG’s subsidiary Arvato’s P2P technology.
