A panel at FT’s Mobile Conference 2006 has downplayed predictions that the FIFA World Cup to be held in Germany in a few months (Go you Aussie good thing) will boost adoption of mobile TV. “Citing the lack of widespread rights deals (T-Mobile has an exclusive deal), shortage of handsets in the market, “compelling” content packages and a true business case for operators, speakers from the Mobile Entertainment Forum, Real Nertworks and the GSM Association agreed that this year was too early for the mass adoption of mobile TV or other World Cup related mobile content.”
They also mentioned that during the recent Winter Olympics there was a lot of online activity as people tried to bypass the official deals…so combining mobile social networks with video cameraphones and it won’t be easy for rights holders to maintain exclusivity.
