Modest weekday circulation gains for a few papers including USA Today, NYT and Chicago Tribune during the six months ending in March but overall newspaper circ slipped 2.5 percent (initial reports of 2.6 percent drop were an ABC mistake) from while Sunday was down 3.1 percent, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations FAS-FAX numbers released today. Hardest hit was the San Francisco Chronicle, which dropped 15.6 percent while cutting back on less desirable circulation. The Boston Globe, which continues to be a problem area for NYTC), lost 8.5 percent and dropped below 400,000 daily. On the plus side, traffic to newspaper web sites was up 8 percent, according to Nielsen NetRatings numbers from the NAA; the publishers’ association says about 56 million users spent time at newspaper sites.
