Leads the design of images, information graphics and multimedia for NPR Digital Media products services; establishes consistency in content, approach and style of editorial multimedia created for and used on the other site; manages and prioritize resources for design projects and oversee work produced by NPR Interactive Designers, interns, or external vendors; also performs significant hands-on design work and consults on information design issues across the site.
Education/experience.
B.A. Graphics, Art, or Design from an accredited four-year college or university (or equivalent, relevant work experience); at least three to five years web experience; five or more years experience in art direction/creative direction; significant experience in a top-tier news organization; strong creative ability and perspective; aptitude for visual storytelling; demonstrated news judgment and analytical skills, particularly of analysis of quantitative data; strong organizational skills and ability to work under tight deadlines; ability to multitask; strong grasp of current trends in website navigation, architecture, planning , and usability matters; command of web design technologies and methodologies; command of Photoshop, Illustrator, Visio, and Flash; excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to present ideas and designs to a group; demonstrated ability to work well independently or on a team, always showing respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system; preferred experience with news publication design or Web design within a media or publication environment; equal ability and facility with Mac & Windows environments; strong writing and proofreading skills; familiarity with HTML, JavaScript, and table-less CSS layout and ability to incorporate both user feedback and critical design critique.
