First Look: CBS Innertube

Not a lot to look at yet. Three featured pieces to start — “Geek To Chic” (13:231), “Beyond Survivor” (4:11), “Survivor Live” (55:55). One new segment will be posted every weekday. (A David Letterman segment with Pearl Jam showed up Friday.) The design is simple with an embedded player that starts as soon as the page is loaded and works across platforms. The video toggles easily between standard and full-screen. With such a small amount of content I thought it would be hard to see how well features like browse and search work but browsing internet originals brought up a lot of material that wasn’t in the main menu. Ditto for other categories so if you don’t see something in the main menu, try browsing. (At one point, it got stuck generating a playlist.) CBS provides a “share” email form but doesn’t provide HTML coding, making innertube less powerful in terms of viral video and social networking. This channel is aimed at a younger audience. Unfortunately, that audience may associate the name more with “YouTube” than network entertainment.
