Ad-supported Comic Strips Coming To Cell Phones

Smashphone LogoCalifornia start-up SmashPhone is planning to offer an ad-supported mobile comic service. The ads (which will cost 5c a frame) are to be shown before the comics. The hopes are to sign up the top 100 advertisers, with the comic creators getting 25% of advertising revenue. SmashPhone makes a big deal of its mobile comic technology. “What’s been missing is a product more exciting than wallpaper, but not so expensive as video. SmashPhone flipbooks define a new product category that like ringtones and wallpaper works on most phones and makes economic sense. SmashPhone flipbooks are the only practical solution for delivering comic strips to mobile phones today, and are great for fashion highlights, sports highlights, game cards, and advertising.” GoComics may disagree with this last assertion… Flipbooks actually sounds like a good system, but I haven’t tried it so I can’t give any definitive review.
