Amidst the hullabullo over Yahoo Tech, Yahoo quietly rolled out a revamped version of “Kevin Sites in the Hot Zone” today. The cleaner, video-centric look is aimed at streaming performance while highlighting multimedia. Scott Moore, VP news and information, told me “this upgrade represents an evolution of Kevin’s presentation that reflects our ongoing commitment to the content and points in the direction of design elements you’ll see us rolling out on other sites in the near future.” He calls it an example of how Yahoo has “evolved to more media-centric publishing.” Moore says people who look at Sites’ traffic — 1.4 million monthly uniques, according to most recent ComScore — and think it sounds low or don’t think it’s a business don’t get it, that Sites would be in the top 40 of news sites. Says Moore, “From my perspective, 1.4 million is a big audience.” He may have a point. That kind of number for a major part of the portal would be sub-optimal but for a still nascent, micro-news site, it’s more than respectable. Then again, it’s also supported by a massive portal and has had more publicity via the interest of other journalists than most new sites get.
Among the changes:
— improved site performance and load time
— made the site wide-screen (1024)
— added a flickr “photo journal” and new diary
— added an interactive map with direct links to locations on his journey
–created a more graphical interface featuring slideshows and video
