SMS Gets A Leg-up Over Voice In Mobile Usage: IDC Survey

The Hindu Business Line: An IDC survey shows that SMS (Texting) is eating into voice’s share in mobile usage. Mobiles are showing an average usage of less than an hour for voice (incoming and outgoing calls). “Reduction in voice usage is due to an increasing number of subscribers being from low-spending market segments such as workers and students,” Shailendra Gupta, Manager, User Research, IDC (India) Ltd, said. They mostly use SMS, which are cheaper.
An average Indian mobile user sends 6 messages in a day and receives 8, according to the IDC India Mobile Handset Usage Satisfaction Study 2006.
