So Disney jumps in on online VOD of its shows in UK as well, after doing such deal in U.S. over the last six months or so…its syndication division Buena Vista International Television has agreed an exclusive deal with Channel 4 for online VOD rights to Lost and Desperate Housewives in the UK. Starting today, the entire first season of Lost will be made available for download at 99p per episode from the C4 website and via NTL-Telewest’s VoD service. Season two of Lost is due to begin on C4 next week and episodes from this series will be accessible in the same way 14 days after broadcast. Seasons one and two of Desperate Housewives will also join the line-up next month.
The deal with BVITV is likely to be followed by more with overseas programme suppliers.
Reuters: Publicly-owned Channel 4 said this week that it plans to launch a broader VOD service this autumn which could include shows like “Big Brother.” But the roll-out might be impeded by the deadlocked negotiations with indie producers’ group Pact over how the rights to new media services like VOD will be split. Channel 4 CEO Andy Duncan said he is cautiously optimistic an agreement can be reached.
